One man killed, another injured when ATV crashes into ditch

SAINT MICHAEL -- One man was killed and another injured after an ATV crashed into a ditch early Saturday morning, Alaska State Troopers said Monday.

Glen Tom, 37, of Stebbins, died after the crash at about 12:50 a.m. on the BIA Road three miles outside Saint Michael, troopers said.

Tom was driving the Honda ATV with passenger Leo Kobuk Jr., 51, of Stebbins, when he lost control and the vehicle crashed into a ditch, troopers said.

Tom died minutes later, and Kobuk was treated for his injuries and released, troopers said.

Neither man was wearing a helmet, and alcohol and marijuana use were factors, troopers said.

Saint Michael is a village of about 450 people, located 125 miles southeast of Nome. Stebbins is eight miles north of Saint Michael.
